Iron Man

Ok, normally when someone mentions marvel to me these days I cringe and struggle to maintain my cerished childhood memories of my favourite superhereos. Infact until I actually “watched” the trailer for Iron Man I wasn’t even going to watch it until it came out on DVD, that was until I found myself at the cinema one day with a choice between “Prom Night” and the latter, so I bought my ticket and readied myself for marvel’s latest disaster.

But what I found was a very well written movie, with good acting and decent action, I was pleasantly suprised….The first thing I noticed while watching the movie is that I instantly wanted to BE Tony Stark after watching him for less than 10 minutes. Tony Stark is quite possibly the coolest geek on the planet, he’s a genius, he’s rich, he’s ladies man and he makes huge explosions for a living.

One of the more satisfying components of the movie was overall character development (generally absent in marvel movies, i’m looking at you Xmen and Spiderman). Stark starts off as a self absorbed, playboy who’s whole perspective on life is turned around when he faces his own mortality and gets a reality check after being captured by terrorists.

Humbled by this experience Stark escapes and sets off to make a difference in the world. Donning the gold and yellow armour we all know.

Iron Man is not the most action filled movie I have ever seen but, you wont care most of the time as you’ll be too busy paying attention to Robert Downey Jnr’s terrific acting. I’m not joking when I say this but you’ll be literally laughing or sniggering most of the time while watching this film. Iron Man is PG-13 but there are plenty of adult jokes and humour which means it’s a good viewing for kids and adults alike.

Giving the current trainwreck of marvel movies being released (they’re remaking the Hulk because it was so awful) it’s a refreshing change to go view one and generally be entertained. I really hope this trend continues as there are still marvel characters I’d like to see make it to the big screen unmutilated. Now if only we can convince them to remake spiderman everything will be sweet.

Rating: 9/10

“Could have used more action but a clever script and terrific acting more than make up for it”
